Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area

Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area is a fragmented protected reserve in New South Wales, Australia, encircling sections of one of the country's largest coastal saltwater lagoons. Located roughly 20 kilometres southwest of Newcastle on the edge of the City of Lake Macquarie, the reserve is made up of six separate land sections along 16 kilometres of foreshore rather than a single contiguous block. The area was established in 1996, with an additional section added in 1999, and is managed by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. Its role in the regional conservation network is to preserve remaining stands of natural bushland around the lake and to protect vegetation communities that do not occur elsewhere in the New South Wales park system. Beyond its conservation value, the reserve is also a recreational anchor for the region: part of the long-distance Great North Walk traverses the area, and some sections host campgrounds, a sport and recreation centre, and volunteer restoration efforts through local Landcare groups.
