Landstuhler Bruch

The Landstuhler Bruch is a broad lowland basin and natural area in the Westpfalz region of Rhineland-Palatinate in southwestern Germany. Stretching roughly 20 kilometers from the area around Landstuhl toward Kaiserslautern, it forms the central depression of the larger St. Ingbert-Kaiserslautern lowland, surrounded by the Nordpfälzer Bergland to the north and the steep Sickinger Höhe escarpment to the south. Originally a waterlogged moorland, the basin was once nearly impassable, crossed only by wooden causeways and navigable by boat during spring flooding. Centuries of peat cutting, drainage works, and lowered groundwater levels transformed it into a relatively dry plain. Today it is recognized as a protected landscape under the IUCN Category V framework, with parts also designated under the European Natura 2000 network for their residual wetland habitats. Although much of its marshy character has been lost, the Landstuhler Bruch retains important ecological value through preserved bog remnants, restored shallow water bodies, and wetland sanctuaries such as the Geisweiher nature reserve. These areas shelter rare plants, amphibians, and a distinctive bird community, giving the basin a quieter but still meaningful ecological identity within the Palatinate landscape.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
