Laubwald am Hasselbachgraben

Laubwald am Hasselbachgraben is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the municipality of Simmerath in the Städteregion Aachen, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It lies east of Roetgen and north of Lammersdorf, on the eastern side of the L 12 state road, and covers roughly 2.88 square kilometers of the northern Eifel landscape. The protected area is dominated by mixed deciduous forest and the deeply cut valley of the Hasselbach, a small stream that rises above the Simonsbrander Weg and flows west toward the Dreilägerbach reservoir. Roughly one third of the forest consists of European beech (Rotbuche) and another third of spruce (Fichte), with the remainder made up of oak, birch, and other native broadleaf species. The presence of standing and lying dead wood marks the woodland as near-natural and ecologically valuable. Within the reserve sits Naturwaldzelle Nr. 1 of North Rhine-Westphalia, known as Kreitzberg, a 12-hectare compartment of very old beech forest with sessile oak and silver birch that is central to the reserve's conservation significance. The area was designated as a nature reserve in 1999 and falls under IUCN Category IV, recognizing its role as a habitat and species management area. Its protection aims at preserving old beech and oak stands, natural rock formations, extensively used oat-grass meadows, and near-natural stream habitats, while gradually converting spruce monocultures into more natural beech woodland.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
