Leimersheimer Altrhein

Leimersheimer Altrhein is a small but ecologically significant protected area in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, lying south of the city of Speyer in the Germersheim district. The site centers on a former arm of the Rhine that was cut off when the river was straightened in the 19th century, creating a classic oxbow landscape that has since matured into a rare example of Upper Rhine floodplain habitat. The area is formally protected as the EU Bird Protection Area known as "Karlskopf und Leimersheimer Altrhein" and forms part of the wider Natura 2000 network. It is closely connected to the surrounding Hördter Rheinaue nature reserve and the broader Pfälzische Rheinauen landscape protection area, together creating a continuous corridor of wetland habitat along the active Rhine floodplain. Although modest in size, the site has gained considerable importance for waterbird conservation. It hosts the largest cormorant breeding colony in Rhineland-Palatinate and supports wintering waterfowl populations that rank among the most significant in the state, making it a key refuge for species that have lost much of their natural habitat elsewhere along the regulated Rhine.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
