The upper reaches of the Mausbach flow through a Sohlenkerbtal, a valley shape where the stream sits in a shallow groove within the surrounding terrain, and where the slopes carry a near-natural beech forest typical of the region. Further downstream the valley deepens into a Kerbsohlental, a narrower V-shaped profile cut more sharply into the plateau, and the former open floodplain has been replanted with a young mixed deciduous forest of sycamore maple, hornbeam, ash and alder, which has strong potential to develop into true alder-ash floodplain woodland.

Parallel to the main valley, the reserve includes two left tributary valleys. The Liethsiefen rises from a clear spring area near the locality of Lieth, and the Hirschfelder Bachtal broadens out east of Unterschneppen into a long, open valley floor.
