The initiative bore fruit on 1 June 2021, when the park was officially established as the 104th German Naturpark. Its seat is located in Neuenstein, and since March 2022 its administrative office has been based at Schloss Neuenstein, a historic castle venue that anchors the park's public presence in the region.

The Knüllgebirge is a low mountain range of magmatic origin that arose in the middle Tertiary, roughly 10 million years ago.
