Headwater streams, boggy alder forests, and quiet stream valleys along the upper Inde near Aachen

Naturschutzgebiet Oberlauf der Inde im Münsterwald

Naturschutzgebiet Oberlauf der Inde im Münsterwald is a small nature reserve in the western part of North Rhine-Westphalia, situated within the city area of Aachen near the Belgian border. The reserve protects the headwater sections of the Inde river together with parts of the Prälatensief and the upper and middle reaches of the Fobisbach and several smaller tributaries. The landscape is shaped by narrow stream valleys, wet soils with strong waterlogging, and nutrient-poor conditions that have produced distinctive boggy woodland communities. These include alder carr with moor sedge, wet oak-birch forest, boggy spring mires, and Molinia-dominated wet grasslands, all rare and ecologically valuable within the broader region. The reserve was designated in 1988 and is managed under the landscape plan of the city of Aachen by the lower landscape authority of the Städteregion Aachen. It is recognized for its rare plant communities, its near-natural stream corridors, and its unusual combination of valley forest, spring mire, and wet meadow habitats in a small area close to the urban edge of Aachen.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
