Oberes Ammertal mit dem Seitental Merkental

Oberes Ammertal mit dem Seitental Merkental is a designated landscape protection area (Landschaftsschutzgebiet) in the municipality of Ammerbuch, located in the Tübingen district of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. Established in 1982, the protected area covers a compact stretch of the upper Ammer valley between the villages of Reusten and Poltringen, extending into the side valley of Merkental. It is classified as an IUCN Category V Protected Landscape, reflecting its role in safeguarding a culturally shaped yet ecologically valuable working landscape rather than a strict nature reserve. The area is valued for its near-natural stream course, traditionally managed grassland floodplain, and the diverse slopes that frame the valley. South-facing slopes in particular host botanically rich habitats, including steppe heath, semi-dry grassland, dry grassland, and rock communities supported by Muschelkalk (shell limestone) geology and former quarry sites that have left behind small open water bodies. Natural-regionally, the landscape sits within the Schönbuch and Glemswald major unit of the Swabian Keuper-Lias Land. Although small, the protected area carries meaningful regional importance as part of the network of landscape protection areas in the Tübingen district. It preserves the scenic character of the upper Ammer valley, maintains traditional land use patterns such as meadow farming in the valley bottom, and protects habitat mosaics that are increasingly rare in intensively farmed regions of southwestern Germany.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
