Poland's smallest national park protecting Jurassic karst landscapes and rich biodiversity

Ojców National Park

Ojców National Park is Poland's smallest national park, located in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship approximately 16 kilometers north of Kraków. Established in 1956, the park covers an area of 21.46 square kilometers across the Jurajska Upland portion of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. The park is named after the village of Ojców, which serves as its administrative headquarters. The park's landscape is characterized by distinctive karst topography, featuring dramatic limestone cliffs, deep ravines, and over 400 caves formed in soluble Jurassic bedrock. The Prądnik and Sąspówka river valleys carve through the terrain, creating a network of steep-sided gorges and distinctive rock formations. The most famous of these is Hercules' Club (Maczuga Herkulesa), a 25-meter-high limestone column that has become an iconic symbol of the park. Ojców National Park holds significant conservation importance despite its small size. The park supports remarkable biodiversity with over 5,500 species documented, including approximately 4,600 insect species and 135 bird species. The park also lies along the historic Trail of the Eagles' Nests, a chain of medieval castles connecting Kraków with other significant landmarks in the region.
