Periochi Agias Theklas - Liopetri

Periochi Agias Theklas - Liopetri is a small protected natural area on the southeastern coast of Cyprus, lying between the coastal locality of Agia Thekla and the inland village of Liopetri. It is designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the European Natura 2000 network, with the official site code CY3000009. Although the site covers only around 70 hectares of terrestrial habitat in Mediterranean Cyprus, it carries significant conservation value because of the diversity of bird species for which it was designated. The protected site was established in April 2008 specifically to safeguard bird populations that depend on this stretch of the Cypriot coastline and its immediate hinterland. It supports a community of breeding, wintering, and passage bird species typical of the eastern Mediterranean, including waders, herons, larks, and tern-related species. Its protected status ties it into the wider European effort to maintain functioning ecological networks for migratory and resident birds. Because of its modest size, the site does not include any formally protected habitat types under the Natura 2000 habitat classification, and its main conservation importance rests entirely on the bird fauna it supports. Within the broader tapestry of Cypriot Natura 2000 sites, it represents one of the small, locally focused areas whose contribution lies in maintaining stepping-stone habitats for Mediterranean birdlife around the Famagusta Bay region.
