Forêt d'Erstein National Nature Reserve

The Forêt d'Erstein National Nature Reserve is a small protected area in the Bas-Rhin department of the Grand Est region in northeastern France, lying in the historic floodplain of the Rhine about 15 kilometers south of Strasbourg. Covering roughly 180 hectares of essentially forested land, it represents one of the wildest surviving sections of the communal woodland of Erstein. The reserve sits on alluvial terraces shaped by the former bed of the Rhine and is crossed by a dense network of former river branches known locally as the Giessen. Even though the canalization of the Rhine in the 1970s ended regular flooding, the site retains a rich mosaic of humid woodland, open water, and flood-influenced flora. This combination of varied microhabitats supports a notably high biodiversity for such a compact area and gives the reserve its distinctive ecological character. The Forêt d'Erstein is particularly valued as a reference site for the Rhine floodplain forests of Alsace, preserving a rare example of the wild, dynamic river-influenced woodland that once stretched widely across the Upper Rhine plain before modern river engineering.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
