Réserve naturelle nationale de la forêt d'Offendorf

The Réserve naturelle nationale de la forêt d'Offendorf is a small national nature reserve in the Alsace region of northeastern France, centred on the commune of Offendorf in the Bas-Rhin department. Established in 1989, the reserve protects roughly 60 hectares of alluvial forest along the Rhine floodplain, within the larger ecological complex of the Alsatian Ried. Its setting, around twenty kilometres north of Strasbourg, places it in the middle of one of the most characteristic wetland landscapes of the Upper Rhine valley. The reserve preserves a long, narrow strip of habitat shaped by former channels and gravel banks of the Rhine. It harbours a mosaic of softwood floodplain woodland, hardwood levee forest, reedbeds, and open clearings that sustain a wide range of plant and animal life. Although the construction of the Rhine channelisation dike in the twentieth century ended the regular flooding that once nourished the forest, groundwater seepage continues to maintain the area's distinctive ecological character. Although modest in size, the Offendorf reserve is ecologically significant as a protected sample of a once much more extensive Rhine alluvial forest system. It represents one of the national nature reserves that together form the backbone of France's strict nature protection network, and it provides a reference site for understanding the natural heritage of the Alsatian floodplain.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
