Bastberg Hill Regional Nature Reserve

The Bastberg Hill Regional Nature Reserve is a small protected area in the Grand Est region of northeastern France, occupying the upper slopes of the Bastberg, a limestone hill in the Bas-Rhin department of historic Alsace. Covering only around 6.45 hectares, the reserve is one of many small regional nature reserves in France, but it stands out for its strongly calcareous character, its dry grassland habitats, and its remarkable concentration of wild orchids. The landscape of the reserve is shaped by thin limestone soils and relatively low rainfall, conditions that promote the development of calcareous grasslands, locally known as pelouses calcicoles. These open habitats support a flora that includes orchids and other specialist dry-ground plants, while the warm, exposed slopes also create favorable conditions for a diverse insect fauna. The hill rises to about 326 meters, giving the site an unusually pronounced local relief that lends it an almost sub-alpine feel despite its modest size. Nearby Bouxwiller is the closest town, and the reserve sits within easy reach of the larger Vosges du Nord Regional Natural Park. Although small, the Bastberg reserve is an important local stronghold for rare orchids, butterflies, and other invertebrates, making it a meaningful conservation site within the Alsatian countryside.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
