Markowiec-Gródek Nature Reserve

Markowiec-Gródek Nature Reserve is a small forest reserve in the Beskid Niski mountains of southern Poland, in the Małopolska region. It lies within Gmina Uście Gorlickie, in the villages of Hańczowa and Wysowa-Zdrój, and is administered by the Łosie Forest District. The reserve was created to protect a near-natural Carpathian beech forest ecosystem around two mountain summits: Markowiec, at 640 meters, and Gródek, at 706 meters. The landscape includes rocky debris slopes, steep terrain, stream valleys, and forested ridges, where the forest retains a character close to its original state. Large amounts of coarse deadwood support rich communities of beetles, fungi, and lichens, including several primeval-forest relic species. The reserve was established in December 2024 as part of the initiative to create one hundred nature reserves for the centenary of Poland's State Forests. The proposal came from the Polish Society for the Protection of Birds, reflecting strong ornithological and ecological interest in the area's forest habitat value.
