A Ramsar-listed wetland at the mouth of the Alpine Rhine into Lake Constance

Rhine Delta

The Rhine Delta is the freshwater river delta where the Alpine Rhine enters the south-eastern corner of Lake Constance. Located mainly in the Austrian province of Vorarlberg, with a smaller portion in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen, it forms the largest wetland biotope reserve on the lake and one of the most important bird habitats in Central Europe. Its landscape combines shallow bays, reed beds, wet meadows, riparian forests, and the two protruding peninsulas of Rheinspitz and Rohrspitz. Shaped by the retreating Rhine glacier at the end of the last ice age, the delta is still actively growing and is part of a long-term geological process that would eventually silt up the lake. Recognized internationally as a Ramsar site since 1982 and integrated into the European Natura 2000 network, the reserve protects habitats for more than 300 recorded bird species, a wealth of amphibians, and a growing community of returning mammals such as the beaver. It stands as a landmark example of balancing intensive land use with large-scale wetland conservation in the Alpine foothills.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
