Rohrlache von Heringen

The Rohrlache von Heringen is a protected floodplain wetland in the Werra valley, located north of the town of Heringen in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district of northeastern Hesse, close to the border with Thuringia. It is known primarily as the largest inland saline site in the state of Hesse, where natural salt seepage combines with saline discharges linked to the long history of potash mining along the Werra. The wetland's defining ecological character is its halophytic plant communities, including dense stands of salt-tolerant species such as glasswort, sea aster, and salt-grass, which form in shallow saline depressions in the floodplain. Beyond its botanical significance, the Rohrlache serves as an important breeding and resting area for a wide range of waterbirds, waders, and amphibians, giving the area both regional and supra-regional ecological importance. The site stands as a rare example of a protected landscape where natural hydrological processes and the long-term effects of industrial activity have together created a distinctive saline ecosystem. Designated as a nature reserve in 1979 and later incorporated into the Natura 2000 network, it is today protected under multiple overlapping designations, including status as part of the Grünes Band Hessen national natural monument.
