Röhrsberg, Hasenwinkel, Mühlberg

Röhrsberg – Hasenwinkel – Mühlberg is a 451-hectare Natura 2000 Fauna-Flora-Habitat site in the western Eichsfeld district of Thuringia, Germany, near the Hessian border. It protects two adjacent but separate landscape fragments: the Hasenwinkel, a Zechstein ridge crowned with dolomite rock and semi-dry grassland, and the Röhrsberg area around a wave-limestone hill along with the Mühlberg and Höhberg woodlands. The site is dominated by extensive, structurally rich beech forest growing on a mix of Buntsandstein and Muschelkalk substrates, with the European beech as the dominant species, interspersed with juniper heaths, calcareous semi-dry grassland, and exposed limestone and dolomite outcrops. It was designated primarily to safeguard bat habitats, including the Bechstein's bat, the greater mouse-eared bat, and the lesser horseshoe bat, all linked to the wider Werrabergland bird protection area. Beyond its legal identity as a Habitats Directive site, the area represents one of the most geologically and floristically diverse sections of the Unteres Werrabergland, with orchid-rich beech forests, priority calcareous habitats, and a long tradition of protection that reaches back almost a century for the Hasenwinkel hill.
