Rough Mountain Wilderness

Rough Mountain Wilderness is a small but rugged U.S. Wilderness Area set within the Warm Springs Ranger District of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests in western Virginia. Straddling the boundary between Bath County and Alleghany County, it protects approximately 9,300 acres of steep, forested Appalachian terrain that rises along the ridgeline of Rough Mountain and culminates at Griffin Knob. The wilderness is notable less for visitor amenities than for the extreme solitude it provides. Its difficult access, limited water sources, scarcity of suitable campsites, and the presence of only one established trail make it one of the least-visited corners of Virginia's national forest system. The result is a protected landscape where natural processes and rugged topography dominate the experience. Although the surrounding region is rich in recreational forests, springs, and historic resort areas, Rough Mountain Wilderness stands out for its remoteness and for the unusually quiet, almost untouched character of its interior ridges. The wilderness offers a rare example of low-impact Appalachian forest preserved in a near-wilderness state.
