About Salten Å

Salten Å is one of the most ecologically significant small river systems in central Jutland, Denmark, both because of its own intact valley and because of its role within the larger Gudenå drainage basin. The stream begins on the sandy heath of Sepstrup Sande, then flows southeastward through Skærbæk Plantage and past the historic site of Ansø Mølle, where it receives spring-fed waters from the Ansø Enge wetlands. Continuing eastward, it joins a section around Snabegård and Vrads Sande that is formally protected through Danish nature conservation orders, and along this stretch it absorbs the tributary Lystrup Å, which in turn drains the lake chain of Kulsø, Kvinsø, and Bryrup Langsø from the south.

The middle course of the stream passes beneath the Silkeborg-Nørre Snede highway at Katrinedal Mølle, where the surrounding terrain shifts toward forested valley slopes. The southern bank here is dominated by Velling Skov, one of the important broadleaf woodlands of the region. Just east of here, the stream passes Salten Profilet, a striking inland cliff formation on its northern side. After crossing the Silkeborg-Horsens road, Salten Å enters Salten Langsø, from whose eastern end it continues a short distance before reaching its confluence with the much larger Gudenå between Mossø and Gudensø.
