Slatinná louka u Velenky

Slatinná louka u Velenky is a small natural monument (přírodní památka) located in the village of Hradištko in the Nymburk District of the Central Bohemian Region, Czech Republic. Declared on 21 October 2014, the site occupies roughly 3.83 hectares of flat lowland terrain at around 182 to 183 meters above sea level, immediately adjacent to the floodplain landscape of the middle Elbe lowland. The protected area preserves a fragment of the rare bezkolencové louky, or Molinia-rich alkaline meadows, that once characterized this part of Central Bohemia. These sod-forming, calcium-influenced grasslands develop on calcareous, peaty, or clay-rich soils and depend on a delicate hydrological balance. The natural monument overlaps with a similarly named Site of Community Importance (evropsky významná lokalita) within the Natura 2000 network, linking its national protection to the wider European conservation framework. Beyond its intrinsic botanical value, the site plays a strategic role as a potential buffer and expansion habitat for populations of two highly protected species centered on the neighboring national nature monument of the same name. By maintaining suitable open, base-rich meadow conditions, the area helps ensure the long-term survival of fen-meadow species whose broader distribution across the region has become fragmented.
