Vallée de l'Antenne

The Vallée de l'Antenne is a protected river-valley site in western France, designated under the European Natura 2000 network and straddling the departments of Charente-Maritime and Charente in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It follows the course of the Antenne, a small right-bank tributary of the Charente river, from its source near Fontaine-Chalendray downstream to the town of Cognac. The site sits in a very gentle landscape that descends from around 50 metres to about 10 metres above sea level over its 48-kilometre course, creating slow-flowing water, meanders, secondary channels and floodplain wetlands. These conditions sustain an unusually well-preserved alluvial system in the region, dominated by ash and alder riparian woodland together with poplar plantations and patches of dry calcareous grassland. The valley was proposed as a Natura 2000 site in March 1999 and formally validated on 12 February 2004, reflecting its importance for seven habitats and nineteen species of European Community interest, including the highly threatened European mink, several bat species and a population of the rare Rosalia longhorn beetle (Rosalie des Alpes).
