During the first half of the nineteenth century, the land within the floodplain of the Blanice River was primarily used for hay production and pasturage. By the early twenty-first century the surrounding fields and meadows were still in agricultural use, with cut meadows, uncut meadows, pastures, and arable fields all present around the watercourse.
The site gained formal protection when the Regional Authority of the South Bohemian Region declared it a natural monument, a category used for smaller, scientifically valuable areas, with effect from 2 January 2014. The protection covers a defined portion of the river and the adjoining habitats that harbour threatened species. The natural monument overlaps partially with an earlier, larger Site of Community Importance of the same name, which was designated in 2005 and, at 402.6 hectares, extends much further north to reach the town of Vlašim in the Central Bohemian Region.

Winter visits can provide a clear view of the river's meanders against the open floodplain, although snow cover, lasting on average sixty to eighty days in the area, can make some paths more difficult.
