A small protected forest gorge in central Bohemia with old beech woods and a granite boulder field

Vlčí rokle

Vlčí rokle is a small protected natural area in central Bohemia, located in the Středočeský kraj near the village of Krhanice and north of Prosečnice. Designated as a Czech přírodní památka, the site safeguards a fragment of old acidophilic beech forest together with a striking geological feature: a boulder-strewn ravine shaped by the gradual weathering of Carboniferous biotite granite. The ravine itself was carved by erosion from a small stream called Vlčín, and its lower section contains a true stone field of rounded granodiorite boulders. The forest contains beech trees more than 200 years old, giving the site a strong sense of old-growth character despite its very small size. Although the area covers less than nine hectares, it is valued for the combination of a rare ancient woodland and a distinctive geological phenomenon. Within the broader Posázaví landscape, Vlčí rokle stands out as a place where deep-rooted Central European forest dynamics meet geology dating back roughly 330 million years. Its protected status reflects an interest in allowing natural forest processes to continue where possible, while keeping disturbance minimal.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
