Wadrilltal

Wadrilltal is a nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the Hochwald region of northwestern Saarland, in southwestern Germany. It protects a section of the Wadrill stream valley and its surrounding slopes within the municipality of Wadern. The reserve was formally designated on 18 November 2016 and consolidates earlier protected areas, including the formerly separate "Wadrilltal bei Wedern" reserve established in 2005. The protected landscape is centered on a near-natural stream valley with floodplain forests, naturally eutrophic ponds, and a mosaic of grassland habitats ranging from wet meadows to calcareous fescue meadows and montane mat-grass swards. Together, these habitats form a structurally rich biotope complex that supports an unusually diverse range of plant and animal species. Its ecological value is recognized through its inclusion in the European Natura 2000 network. The reserve is notable for combining aquatic, wetland, and grassland conservation objectives in a single valley system along the Wadrill river. It continues across the state border into Rhineland-Palatinate as another nature reserve, creating a cross-border habitat corridor along the same watercourse.
