Wälder im östlichen Solling

Wälder im östlichen Solling is a nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the eastern part of the Solling, a forested low mountain range in the German state of Lower Saxony. Designated on 15 October 2020, it covers roughly 1,479 hectares within the municipality of Moringen and the unincorporated area of Solling, in the district of Northeim. The reserve protects extensive tracts of Hainsimsen beech forest, where European beech dominates alongside sessile and pedunculate oak, silver birch, rowan, ash, and sycamore maple. Smaller areas of alder-ash spring and stream forests, historical wood-pasture structures, species-rich grasslands, and near-natural stillwaters add ecological variety to the predominantly woodland landscape. The area is also part of the larger Solling Bird Protection Area and overlaps almost entirely with an FFH (Habitats Directive) site. It is recognized for its value to large mammals such as lynx and wildcat, a range of forest birds including black stork and several woodpecker species, and characteristic stream fauna such as bullhead and brown trout.
