Wurmtal Nature Reserve

The Wurmtal Nature Reserve is a protected landscape following the course of the Wurm River in the southern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It lies on the territory of the cities of Würselen and Herzogenrath, just north of Aachen, where the river leaves the Aachener Becken (Aachen Basin) and cuts a steep-sided valley into the surrounding countryside. The reserve is divided into two official subunits. The southern section, designated in 1989, covers roughly 445 hectares and is shaped by broad, freely meandering stretches of the Wurm through an open, often agricultural floodplain. The much smaller northern section, near Herzogenrath, protects a near-natural lowland river corridor surrounded by silver willow (Salix alba) floodplain forest. The area is locally important for recreation and regionally significant for conservation. Its mosaic of gravel banks, steep erosion banks, meadows, and floodplain woodland supports a large number of bird species, including several rare or threatened ones, while its contrast with the surrounding densely settled Börde landscape gives it strong ecological value as a refuge and migration corridor.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
