Babia Góra National Park
Babia Góra National Park is a Polish national park in southern Poland, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, where it straddles the border area near Slovakia along the Babia Góra massif. The park protects both the northern and southern slopes of the Babia Góra range, including the peak known as Diablak, which at 1725 meters is the highest summit of the Beskid Żywiecki range in the Western Carpathians, along with a fragment of the nearby Policy Range near Krowiarki Pass. The park is best known for its exceptionally clear altitudinal vegetation zonation, climbing through lower montane beech-fir forests, upper montane spruce forest, dwarf mountain pine (kosodrzewina) scrub, and finally an alpine (mountain pasture) zone at the summit. UNESCO designated the area as a biosphere reserve in 1977 under the Man and the Biosphere Programme, and the park hosts rare and endemic plant species such as rogownica alpejska (Cerastium alpinum) on the Babia Góra massif and the symbolic okrzyn jeleni (Laserpitium archangelica), alongside a diverse community of Carpathian wildlife. Together with the Slovak Horná Orava Landscape Park across the border, it anchors a transboundary protected region of considerable botanical and ecological importance in the Western Carpathians, and it draws over one hundred thousand visitors a year.
