The construction itself was repeatedly interrupted by water inflows, and regular extraction did not start until late 1905. The unwanted fraction, roughly 90 percent of which consisted of rock salt, was dumped on a heap south of the shaft.
Eventually, after a severe water inflow in the summer of 1975, the mine was flooded and abandoned. Part of the spoil heap was later removed, but the remaining stump of the deposit continued to leach salts whenever it rained. Drainage water was, and still is, collected in ring ditches at the foot of the heap, primarily depositing sulphate salts.
