Biosphere Reserve Großes Walsertal

The Biosphere Reserve Großes Walsertal is a protected nature reserve in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, tucked into the eponymous Großes Walsertal valley in the Alps. It has been recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve since November 2000, combining conservation of natural diversity with sustainable regional development. The reserve stretches across six small municipalities: Blons, Fontanella, Raggal, Sonntag, St. Gerold, and Thüringerberg. Its landscape shifts from the softer, forested flysch ridges of the Walserkamm in the north to the rugged limestone peaks and scree slopes of the Kalkhochalpen in the south. With a modest permanent population of around 3,420 inhabitants and roughly 180 farms, the region has retained much of its traditional alpine character. The reserve is organized into core, maintenance, development, and regeneration zones, recognizing the valley as a living landscape rather than a strictly off-limits wilderness. It is known for combining ecological protection with cultural heritage, organic farming, and a forward-looking model of sustainable tourism in one of Austria's most scenically intact Alpine valleys.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
