Burghain Falkenstein

Burghain Falkenstein is a small but ecologically distinctive protected area in the Hochtaunuskreis of Hesse, Germany. It encompasses the Burgberg of the ruined Falkenstein castle within the town of Königstein im Taunus, in the wooded uplands of the Taunus range just north of Frankfurt am Main. The site's defining character is its compact, island-like forest cover, which has survived as a green enclave completely surrounded by urban development. Designated as a nature reserve in 1966 and reaffirmed under updated protection in 1974, the area also qualifies as a European Natura 2000 site, recognizing the high conservation value of its native deciduous woodland communities. Visitors encounter a layered cultural landscape, where medieval castle ruins, the remains of an earlier fortification known as Burg Nürings, and a 19th-century commemorative lookout point all sit within a continuous forest habitat. The combination of cultural heritage and protected beech and oak forest gives the reserve an unusually dense identity for its modest size.
