Cysterskie Kompozycje Krajobrazowe Rud Wielkich Landscape Park
Cysterskie Kompozycje Krajobrazowe Rud Wielkich is a large landscape park in the western part of Silesian Voivodeship in southern Poland, established in 1993 to protect the natural, cultural, and scenic qualities of the lands around the Upper Oder basin near Racibórz and Rybnik. It is among the largest landscape parks in Poland, with a core area of roughly 49,000 hectares surrounded by a buffer zone that is composed of several separated sections. The park's identity is closely tied to the legacy of the Cistercian monks who arrived in the village of Rudy from France in 1258 and reshaped the local landscape through centuries of farming, forestry, fish farming, and early industrial activity. Today, the protected area combines extensive forests, agricultural land, rivers, and a network of historic ponds with significant cultural heritage sites, including the former Cistercian monastery and palace complex at Rudy and a narrow-gauge railway. Ecologically, the park is known for protecting remnants of floodplain and oak-hornbeam forests typical of the Upper Oder valley, valuable wetland and aquatic habitats, and the fishpond complex of the Łężczok nature reserve, which serves as an important breeding ground for waterbirds and supports rare aquatic plants.
