El Quimi Biological Reserve

El Quimi Biological Reserve is a protected area in southern Ecuador, located entirely within the province of Morona Santiago. It sits in the southern section of the Cordillera del Cóndor mountain range, bordering the international border line at its northwestern extent and following the watershed divide between the Yukutais and Quimi rivers along the edge of the plateau. The reserve safeguards the headwaters of the Quimi micro-watershed, which forms part of the broader Zamora River basin. Set at elevations between roughly 1,700 and 2,480 meters above sea level, the reserve protects a transitional Andean landscape shaped by ancient tectonic uplift. Its forests and river sources sustain downstream ecosystems and contribute to the regional hydrological network. El Quimi is administered under Ecuador's National System of Protected Areas (SNAP) and was formally established in December 2006. Despite limited biological study, preliminary research suggests a notable mammal fauna for a reserve of its size, including several emblematic Andean species.
