Finniss Conservation Park

Finniss Conservation Park is a small protected area in the Australian state of South Australia, situated in the Mount Lofty Ranges roughly 43 kilometres south of Adelaide and only a short distance west of the town of Ashbourne. The park lies within the gazetted locality of Mount Magnificent and occupies a compact footprint of about 1.23 square kilometres across a high rocky plateau and a series of south-trending ridges and steep valleys. The conservation park is valued primarily for the natural vegetation it preserves, in particular an outstanding remnant of Eucalyptus cosmophylla open forest and scrub that is considered one of the best preserved examples of this vegetation type in the South Mount Lofty Ranges. The park also protects a short stretch of the Finniss River catchment and includes crest, slope and valley floor habitat associations that frame broader views toward the coastline. Although modest in size, Finniss Conservation Park plays an important local role in retaining a representative sample of the open forest and scrub associations that once characterised much of the surrounding hills landscape. It is managed by the South Australian Department for Environment and Water and is recognised under both state conservation legislation and the Register of the National Estate.
