Haute Vallée du Vénéon National Nature Reserve

The Haute Vallée du Vénéon National Nature Reserve is a small protected area in the French Alps, located in the Isère department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It lies within the upper Vénéon valley, on the commune of Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans, and is dominated by the Tête de la Maye at the confluence of the Vénéon river and the Étançons torrent. The reserve covers roughly 61 hectares of rocky slopes, scree, and moraines around the hamlet of La Bérarde, and is bordered to the west by the larger Écrins National Park. Established in 1974, the reserve was created specifically to act as a buffer zone for the core area of Écrins National Park, helping to extend habitat protection beyond the park's primary boundaries. Although modest in size, the site holds notable alpine flora and fauna, including chamois, ibex, marmots, and a breeding bird community of around 50 species. Its setting at the head of one of the most emblematic high valleys of the Oisans makes the reserve an ecologically meaningful adjunct to one of France's leading mountain national parks.
