Hühnermoor

Hühnermoor is a small nature reserve covering about 8.5 hectares in the district of Gütersloh, in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It lies east of the village of Marienfeld, near the Lutter stream, on a lowland site that belongs to the broader Münsterland region. The reserve protects one of the surviving examples of a former raised bog, or Hochmoor, that developed over roughly four thousand years in a closed depression between two sand dunes. Due to historical peat cutting and drainage, the peatland has shifted into a transitional state between a raised bog and a flat bog, but it still preserves typical high-bog plant communities on a modest surface. Because peatlands in central Europe have become extremely rare and ecologically vulnerable, Hühnermoor is recognized as a small but scientifically valuable refuge for specialist bog species. It functions as a living archive of vegetation history, with preserved pollen layers that allow reconstruction of the plant cover of past millennia.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
