Jimbilnan Wilderness

Jimbilnan Wilderness is a protected wilderness area in Clark County, Nevada, covering roughly 18,879 acres on the eastern flank of the Black Mountains and stretching toward the western shoreline of Lake Mead. Designated as wilderness in 2002 and administered by the National Park Service, the area preserves a stretch of rugged Mojave Desert terrain that transitions from rocky mountain canyons to broad desert washes and gently sloping plateaus. The landscape combines steep canyon systems draining eastward out of the Black Mountains with three major washes that flatten out as they approach the Lake Mead shoreline. This topographic gradient creates a mosaic of habitats, supporting both desert upland species and plants associated with the lake's riparian fringe. Although it sits in the shadow of the much larger Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Jimbilnan stands out for its rare plant occurrences and the quiet, lightly visited character of its canyons. The wilderness is notable for the presence of several uncommon desert plants, including Beaver Dam milkvetch and sticky buckwheat, which add botanical significance to a relatively compact protected area. Its position between the Black Mountains and one of the largest reservoirs in the United States also gives Jimbilnan an important role in broader regional conservation, linking upland desert habitats to the lacustrine and shoreline environments of Lake Mead.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
