Jumbo Springs Wilderness

Jumbo Springs Wilderness is a modestly sized federally protected wilderness area in southern Nevada, situated along the arid landscape that overlooks Lake Mead. Although it covers only a few thousand acres, the area preserves a compact cross section of Mojave Desert terrain, from rocky canyons and granitic outcrops to the spring-fed pockets that give the site its name. Designated in 2002 and managed by the Bureau of Land Management, it represents one of the more recent additions to Nevada's system of congressionally designated wilderness areas. The wilderness lies in Clark County, east of Las Vegas, and connects visually and ecologically to both the southern and eastern shores of Lake Mead. Its elevation range and varied rock types support a surprisingly diverse mix of desert plants and animals for such a small footprint, including characteristic Mojave species such as buckhorn cholla and white-tailed antelope squirrels. It is best appreciated as a quiet, rugged preserve of Sonoran-Mojave transition country rather than a destination-scale national park.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
