Compare protected geography around a small forested island and coral-fringed coast

Position Kapas Island within Terengganu's wider coastal and island protected geography

Kapas Island contrasts a dense tropical-forest interior with a bright perimeter of white sand, rocky points, clear shallow water, coral formations, and nearby Gemia Island off Terengganu. The nearby map places this small Malaysian island among surrounding protected records while keeping their terrestrial, coastal, and marine identities distinct.

Kapas Island

Kapas Island is a small tropical island located in the South China Sea off the coast of Marang, in the Malaysian state of Terengganu. The island sits within an archipelago that also includes the much smaller Gemia Island to its north, and its measured land area is just over 1.5 square kilometers. The name Pulau Kapas translates from Malay as "cotton island," a reference to the fine white sand that lines its beaches. The island is characterized by tropical jungle interior, clear seawater, and coral reef formations in the surrounding shallows. It has been promoted as a diving and snorkeling destination within Malaysia's east coast tourism scene, and it is also recognizably important to biologists because most of the scientific research on the unusual Amphidromus snails has been conducted there. Unlike most Malaysian islands that fall under the Department of Fisheries marine park system, Kapas Island has a distinct protection arrangement: it is zoned 1 nautical mile from shore at lowest tide. This makes it an interesting example of a small island with both tourism value and a softer, differently structured form of marine protection.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
