King Range Wilderness

The King Range Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area along California's remote Lost Coast, covering roughly 42,585 acres across parts of Humboldt and Mendocino Counties. It lies within the larger King Range National Conservation Area and is administered by the Bureau of Land Management. The wilderness stretches along the steepest, most rugged stretch of the California coastline outside Alaska. Its defining feature is sheer relief: within about three lateral miles, the mountains climb from sea level to over 4,000 feet, creating dramatic vistas, deep canyons, and the conditions for one of the highest rainfall totals in the continental United States. King Range protects old-growth Douglas-fir forest, coastal prairie, dune systems along the Mattole River, and stretches of undisturbed shoreline. It is also closely associated with the offshore Rocks and Islands Wilderness, a tiny but ecologically important marine protected area set aside in the same 2006 legislation.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
