Lagunas de Zempoala National Park

Lagunas de Zempoala National Park is a natural protected area in central Mexico that encompasses a group of seven lagoons situated in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The park straddles the border between the State of Mexico and Morelos, approximately 50 kilometers south of Mexico City. Established in 1936 by President Lázaro Cárdenas, it represents one of Mexico's oldest national parks and protects a unique high-altitude wetland ecosystem at roughly 2,900 meters above sea level. The name Zempoala derives from the Nahuatl language and translates to either place of many waters or twenty lagoons, reflecting the area's distinctive hydrological character. The park lies within the Chichinautzin biological corridor, a region of exceptional ecological importance that harbors remarkable biodiversity in both aquatic and terrestrial environments.
