Las Tetas de María Guevara

Las Tetas de María Guevara is a protected natural monument located on Isla de Margarita, in the state of Nueva Esparta, northeastern Venezuela. It consists of two twin hills that rise abruptly from a flat, arid coastal plain near the Laguna de La Restinga, within the Municipio Tubores. Despite their modest elevation, the hills are visually striking and have long served as a navigational reference for local fishermen approaching the island from the sea. Declared a natural monument in 1974, the protected area covers roughly 1,670 hectares and includes not only the two hills themselves but also three coastal lagoons bordered by mangroves, known as Boca de Pala, Laguna de Raya, and Laguna de Punta de Piedras. This combination of arid uplands and tidal wetland systems gives the monument a quiet but distinctive ecological character within an island otherwise shaped by tourism and coastal development. Beyond their geographic interest, the twin hills are an iconic cultural symbol of Nueva Esparta and one of the most recognizable landmarks visible from the ferries arriving on the island. Their unusual shape and the local legends tied to them make the site a meaningful point of identity for the region's maritime and island heritage.
