A chronological archive of historical seismic events catalogued by proximity to protected forest landscapes

Recorded Seismic Activity and Earthquake History for the Leiberger Wald Nature Reserve

This historical catalogue compiles recorded seismic events identified by their epicentre location relative to the Leiberger Wald nature reserve in North Rhine-Westphalia. The data provides a documented timeline of regional earthquake occurrences, detailing event magnitudes, focal depths, and relative geographic positions. These records represent independent measurements associated with the broader Paderborn district, facilitating an overview of past seismic activity within the vicinity of these protected beech and floodplain forest ecosystems.

Leiberger Wald

Leiberger Wald is a sizeable nature reserve in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, situated in the Kreis Paderborn on the municipal areas of Bad Wünnenberg and Büren. The protected landscape consists of two separate tracts of largely closed forest with embedded open clearings, lying at the geographical transition between the Sauerland low mountains and the Paderborner Hochfläche. With an area of roughly 1,786 hectares, it is the second largest nature reserve in the Kreis Paderborn and forms a core element of the regional ecological network. The reserve is recognised for its combination of FFH-relevant habitat types, including alder-ash and softwood floodplain forests alongside characteristic beech woodland communities, together with calcareous tufa springs and small streams supporting underwater vegetation. Together with the neighbouring Nettetal reserve, Leiberger Wald is part of a designated EU Natura 2000 site and contributes to a broader bird protection area established from early 2023. Its forest character and ecological connectivity give the area particular significance as a refuge and dispersal corridor for woodland species. The presence of rare breeding birds, the wildcat in the forests, and the bullhead in the streams underlines the value of the reserve for conserving forest-stream ecosystems in this part of western Germany.
