Lild Strand og Lild Strandkær forms one of the recognised Natura 2000 areas in Denmark, focused on the link between the North Sea coast and the inland dune landscape of Thy. The site extends across roughly 749 hectares in Thisted Municipality, bounded by the plantations of Hjardemål Klitplantage to the north and Lild Klitplantage to the south, and captures both the seaward edge of the dune belt and a series of inland lakes lying behind it.

The coastal part of the site shows a textbook zonation of dune habitats. At the seaward edge is a narrow strip of foredune, followed by white dune, then a large and continuous area of grey-green dune where sea-buckthorn dune occurs in mosaic. Behind this outer belt lies a substantial expanse of dune heath interwoven with grey-green dune, dune slacks, and crowberry dune. This combination of active white dunes, stabilised grey-green dune, and inland dune heath is the principal reason the area qualifies as an EU Habitat Area.

Behind the dunes, the site also protects three notable lakes. In the northern part, southwest of Lild Strand, sits Lild Strandkær, a classic Lobelia lake with extremely nutrient-poor, clear water. Further south are the brown-water lakes Bolbredning and Bjålum Sø, with a third brown-water lake at Bagerhule. Around Bolbredning and Bjålum Sø, smaller patches of hanging bog add to the wetland mosaic. A short stretch of stream is also included in the designation.
