Lusk Creek Wilderness

Lusk Creek Wilderness is a federally designated Wilderness Area located in Pope County, in the southernmost part of Illinois, within the broader landscape of the Shawnee National Forest. It encompasses roughly 6,293 acres of rugged, forested terrain carved by the erosional force of Lusk Creek and its tributaries, and it is recognized as the largest Wilderness Area in Illinois. The wilderness contains dramatic sandstone cliffs, deeply incised canyons, scenic overlooks, and terraces of mature second-growth hardwood forest. At its core lies the Lusk Creek Canyon National Natural Landmark, one of the more striking geological features of the region. Government land acquisitions of the 1930s ended cattle grazing and pasture use here, allowing cleared hillsides to revert to forest and producing the dense woodland cover that today defines the area. Lusk Creek Wilderness functions both as a protected natural area and as a key segment of the longer River to River Trail, providing a remote, roadless hiking experience in a part of the country more often associated with agricultural land than with dramatic canyon scenery.
