Orchideenwiese bei Heintjeshammer Nature Reserve

The Orchideenwiese bei Heintjeshammer Nature Reserve is a small protected area in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, sitting on a hillside in the Eschbach valley just north of Pohlhausen in the town of Wermelskirchen. Encompassing roughly 4.3 hectares, it preserves an orchid-rich complex of wet and nutrient-poor grasslands, a historic heath and spring-mire site, and a small wooded valley (Siefen) that together form a compact mosaic of declining semi-natural habitats on the Bergische Hochfläche. The reserve is significant because the Bergische Hochfläche has lost most of its traditional species-rich meadows, and this site retains a particularly valuable assemblage of plants and animals tied to damp, nutrient-poor conditions. Several orchid species grow here alongside cottongrass, devil's-bit scabious, and a range of sedges, rushes, and sphagnum mosses, while the surrounding landscape buffers the meadow and supports pollinating insects. Despite its modest size, the nature reserve plays an important role as a habitat-connection node in the regional landscape plan of Wermelskirchen and contributes to the wider network of protected sites maintained by the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
