Nelson Commonwealth Marine Reserve

Nelson Commonwealth Marine Reserve is a large offshore marine protected area in Commonwealth waters along the southern coast of Australia, near the border between South Australia and Victoria. Sitting in the Southern Ocean, the reserve covers a vast expanse of deep ocean that is only loosely connected to the coast near the South Australian town of Port Macdonnell. The reserve protects deepwater ecosystems dominated by seafloor features such as plateaus, knolls, submarine canyons, and the abyssal plain. It is best known ecologically as a migration corridor for large baleen whales, including humpback, blue, fin, and possibly sei whales, which travel through these productive Southern Ocean waters. Established in 2007 as part of the South-east Commonwealth Marine Reserve Network, Nelson is managed by Parks Australia as an IUCN Category VI area and is zoned for a Special Purpose, balancing conservation protections with limited, regulated activity rather than functioning as a fully no-take zone.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
