Never Summer Wilderness

The Never Summer Wilderness is a U.S. Wilderness Area situated along the Continental Divide in northern Colorado, immediately west of Rocky Mountain National Park and within the Arapaho National Forest. Combined with its later expansion around the Bowen Gulch area, it covers roughly 21,090 acres of the remote Never Summer Mountains, including forest valleys, subalpine basins, alpine tundra, and a string of glacially influenced lakes. The wilderness sits within the Sulphur Ranger District and is jointly governed under U.S. Wilderness Area protections. Its landscapes rise from deep, moisture-trapping ravines to the high peaks along the divide, with eight summits exceeding 12,000 feet. Because the area drains into both the Colorado River and the North Platte River systems, it has long-run significance as a headwater landscape for multiple major watersheds of the American West. The wilderness is best known for two striking features: the dramatic banding and erosion patterns of the Never Summer Range itself, where cloud-wrapped, namesake peaks such as Mount Cirrus, Mount Cumulus, Mount Stratus, and Mount Nimbus define the skyline; and the ancient, four-foot-thick spruce and fir forests of Bowen Gulch, where trees estimated at roughly 600 years old survive in a high-elevation ravine that behaves almost like a biological sanctuary.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
