Schönecker Schweiz Protected Area: An Atlas of the Eifel Limestone Basin Geography
Mapping the karst terrain, dolomite ridges, and submontane habitats of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Schönecker Schweiz stands as a defining example of the Prüm Kalkmulde, showcasing a dense network of steep slopes, plateau uplands, and narrow gorge valleys. This nature reserve serves as an essential refuge for rare calcareous flora and fauna, anchored by a geologically significant dolomite bedrock. The area is marked by striking landforms, including exposed rock faces, swallow holes, and stream meadows, which collectively provide a primary reference site for submontane limestone geography in western Germany.
