Parque Rural de Teno

Parque Rural de Teno is a protected rural park in the extreme northwest of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands in Spain. It occupies the old Teno massif, a triangular volcanic block that rises from sea level to the island's highest ridgelines and is bordered on two sides by the ocean. The park combines dramatic coastal cliffs, deeply cut ravines, and inland uplands that support a striking vertical sequence of Canarian ecosystems, from dry coastal scrub to humid laurel forest near the summits. The area is notable for its high concentration of endemic plants and animals, including laurel forests in Monte del Agua and on the slopes of the Cumbre de Baracán, and tabaibal-cardonal coastal vegetation at Punta de Teno. It also carries significant cultural weight, holding five small traditional settlements and a rich heritage of rural architecture, archaeological sites, and surviving local traditions. Because of its ornithological importance, the European Union has formally designated the wider Teno massif as a Special Protection Area for birds, reinforcing Teno's role as one of Tenerife's most ecologically significant protected landscapes.
