Lapland's primeval birch forest reserve along the Kungsleden trail
Pieljekaise National Park
Pieljekaise National Park is one of Sweden's oldest protected areas, established in 1909 as part of a pioneering group of nine Swedish national parks. Located in the remote Lapland region of Norrbotten County, approximately 10 kilometers south of the village of Jäkkvik in Arjeplog Municipality, the park covers an area of 153.4 square kilometers. The reserve consists predominantly of expansive birch woods that closely resemble natural primeval forest, making it a significant representative of the boreal birch woodland ecosystem in northern Europe. The park is traversed by the famous Kungsleden long-distance hiking trail, which continues northward into the neighboring Vindelfjällens Nature Reserve, one of Europe's largest protected areas. The landscape features a soft U-shaped valley carved by glacial activity at the end of the last Ice Age around 9,000 years ago, with the terrain characterized by rolling birch-covered hills and numerous lakes in the southern portion. The area holds deep cultural significance as part of the traditional lands of the Semisjaur-Njarg Sami community, with archaeological evidence of human presence dating back millennia.
